Google, Deloitte Launch Report to Push for Climate Action

Google, in partnership with consulting firm Deloitte, has launched its Digital Sprinters sustainability report. Google has been committed to using technology to fight climate change, having done so for 30 years. The multinational corporation and technology company recognizes the huge potential of digital technology to advance meaningful action.

The recent report examines how digital technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT) and artificial intelligence (AI) can enable climate resilience and accelerate decarbonization across various high emitting sectors, especially in developing and emerging markets. The report also provides recommendations to drive digital transformation for climate action and calls attention to the role public policy plays in the deployment of these solutions. In addition, the report points out opportunities for digital technologies to decrease emissions by 2030 via artificial intelligence-driven route planning and optimization.

In its statement, Google noted that it believes combating climate change is a crucial collective challenge. There are different paths that could be taken to combat climate change, most of which center on mitigation, foundation for action, resilience and adaptation. While mitigation efforts primarily focus on reducing greenhouse-gas emissions and replacing traditional fuels with cleaner alternatives, adaption centers on sustaining human and natural ecosystems.

On the other hand, foundation focuses on prioritizing environmental actions and creating awareness among the public and policymakers.

The recently released report offers policy recommendations across the following strategic areas:

People

Focus is on improving digital education to help develop a workforce skilled in digital technology and climate science.

Infrastructure

This recommendation is centered on policies that expand data availability and internet access, along with public support for deployment of IoT and satellite. This, the report notes, can foster an environment conducive for effective climate solutions.

Technology Innovation

This recommendation is focused on adopting digital climate solutions, which can strengthen government initiatives, supporting digital business start-ups and establishing innovation hubs.

Enabling Policies

This recommendation is focused on establishing standards for climate-related data and utilizing digital tools to implement sustainability regulations in an effort to encourage sustainable markets.

The report also touches on climate resilience, noting that digital tools are necessary for building strong infrastructure and crisis response, particularly with more than 3.6 billion individuals living in regions susceptible to climate change.

These technologies will help improve automation, innovation and decision-making, while also enabling precise forecasting of climate impact. Additionally, the Digital Sprinters framework will help governments shape policies for digital transformation.

The report also emphasizes the need for public policies to effectively deploy digital solutions, thereby encouraging economic growth and advancing climate action.

Other entities such as Reflex Advanced Materials Corp. (CSE: RFLX) (OTCQB: RFLXF) are also making their contribution to the climate-change fight, and hopefully, these efforts will dial back the rate at which global warming is happening.
