More countries are working to phase out the use of fossil fuels in favor of cleaner technologies, as we work to collectively reduce global emissions. This has seen car manufacturers tap into their creativity to develop innovative technologies, like hydrogen fuel cells.
Hydrogen fuel cell vehicles produce zero emissions as they only emit heat and water vapor from the tailpipe. The use of hydrogen also helps conserve petroleum and eliminates worry of hydrogen’s depletion, given its abundant supply. Hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles are considered safe, especially since their high-pressure tanks have been designed to survive crashes of any kind without breaching or leaking.
Additionally, they lack the charging time issue that plagues many electric cars, as it takes only minutes to refuel them.
Recently, Hyundai announced that it’d be working with a distributor based in the UAE, Juma Al Majid Company, to deliver 2 buses powered by hydrogen fuel cells as part of the Mobility Green Bus Program. The Green Bus Program assesses electric and hydrogen solutions that have been adapted to the United Arab Emirates’ unique environment.
It stresses the importance of collaboration with international manufacturers and includes specialized training to improve Emirati skills.
This initiative is spearheaded by the Integrated Transport Center, with the goal being to evaluate and adopt sustainable tech for public transport in Abu Dhabi. It is capitalizing on Hyundai’s history of rolling out hydrogen fuel cell vehicles in the region.
The South Korean multinational automotive manufacturer launched the first mass-produced car powered by hydrogen, the Hyundai Tucson Fuel Cell, in 2013. A few years later, the firm launched the Hyundai Nexo, a more advanced hydrogen fuel cell vehicle with the highest system efficiency globally.
Currently, the firm’s UAE division is leading in the region when it comes to sustainable transport solutions. The firm’s initiative corresponds with its vision to build a hydrogen economy across the Middle East.
Hyundai UAE Director, Suliman Al Zaben, stated that they were proud to commence this pivotal journey with the Integrated Transport Center towards innovative and sustainable transportation solutions.
Zaben added that delivering the advanced hydrogen-powered buses highlighted the firm’s commitment to pioneering technologies in the Middle Eastern region and promoting clean energy. The green bus program will run until the end of next year, focusing on both regional and city bus categories.
Universe FC will ply regional route 160 while Elec City FC will serve city route 65. By combining local expertise with green technology, the program establishes a benchmark for sustainable transport innovation in the region.
With entities like Aston Bay Holdings Ltd. (TSX.V: BAY) (OTCQB: ATBHF) working to provide the minerals different industries will need to transition to green energy, it is only a matter of time before more jurisdictions register significant progress in greening their transport sectors and other industries.
