Major organizations have joined forces to roll out an initiative focused on lessening the environmental impact of 6G mobile systems. The organizations, through a consortium dubbed EXIGENCE, hope to address the rising environmental toll of digital devices. The project will focus on optimizing service provision, measuring the consumption of energy, and encouraging behavioral changes among IT users, using incentives.
It involves seven countries in the European Union as well as different partners in academic research, the telecom sector and digital transformation. Its partners include Huawei, Detecon, F6S, Eviden, Internet Institute, Instituto de Telecomunicações, Athens University of Economics and Business, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and Telefonica.
This development comes as businesses work to meet their sustainability objectives as the overall carbon footprint of the telecommunications industry continues to grow.
Huawei’s Director of Future Network Technologies, Artur Hecker, revealed that their commitment to driving sustainability standardization with the Third Generation Partnership Project was tied to advancing green-optimization and service-level measurements of energy consumption.
As 6G progresses, experts argue that the relationship humans have with telecom technology also evolves. Already, old devices are being tossed out in favor of newer models, allowing them to leach harmful chemicals into both water and soil. The acceleration of digital transformation is also expected to significantly increase e-waste, which is already an environmental hazard.
Various studies have also linked increased greenhouse gas emissions and energy consumption to enhanced connectivity and the rapid adoption of artificial intelligence. While 4G and 5G wireless tech have efficiently decreased radio power consumption, experts expect that connected devices will consume about 500 TWh of energy when consumers begin using 6G. Data centers are expected to match this consumption to process data efficiently.
To tackle these issues, EXIGENCE plans to work with different players in the mobile industry to create a unified platform that can be used across mobile technologies to streamline operations and generate valuable data related to energy efficiency and sustainability. It will also look into ways to manage the use of mobile tech more sustainably while focusing on the important role that sustainable practices play in achieving the European Green Deal, to make the EU a climate-neutral area by 2050.
The director for WFF’s European Policy Office, Ester Asin, notes that Europe can achieve its nature and climate objectives if it ensures that existing regulations are implemented effectively and efficiently.
The EXIGENCE project is being funded by the European Union via the Smart Networks and Services Joint Undertaking.
As these different efforts take shape and complement what individual companies like Aston Bay Holdings Ltd. (TSX.V: BAY) (OTCQB: ATBHF) are doing, the sustainability movement could deliver huge dividends in a shorter time than was anticipated.
